Everyone loves a good smoothie! I was actually a little late to the old smoothie game. It wasn’t until I was gifted a Nutribullet a couple of years ago did I truly embrace The Smoothie. And boy is it a game changer.
There are so many delicious smoothie recipes out there, so it is very easy to find something you like. But what if you don’t have the exact ingredients in the house? Never fear! Below are my top 5 tips on what to include in a kick-butt smoothie. These five points will ensure you will use what is in the fridge/pantry whilst at the same time, cramming your smoothie with delicious goodness.
Fruit
One/two pieces of fruit will generally suffice. Whatever you like! My faves are a banana (sometimes frozen if I have frozen some seriously ripe ones), mango, pear or a big handful of berries.
Veg
Two veggies as a rough guide - but, the more the merrier! We can never eat too many veg in a day! And if you are making it for kiddies….they will never know, mwahaha. Honestly, chuck in whatever veg is in the fridge! And if it is green, you get added points. Spinach, cucumber, kale, carrot, zucchini, and celery are some great ones. I was going to say any veg, but things like potato and pumpkin might be pushing the friendship.
Good Fat
A heaped few tablespoons of a good, healthy fat! I include avocado in this category. I always add a good chunk of avo to my smoothies, with either a deicious nut butter (peanut, almond, ABC butter etc, tahini occasionally if my pantry is running low), a small handful of nuts, e.g. walnuts, cashews, almonds or some soaked chia seeds.
Liquid
Whatever liquid your heart desires! Water, coconut water, almond milk, coconut milk etc. and ice! Always a cube or two of ice….no-one enjoys a warm summer smoothie.
Extra love
This is the fun part. Sprinkle with love! Some of my fave sprinkles of love include; cinnamon, cacao, coconut flakes, coconut yoghurt or a plain Greek yoghurt, and if I am feeling like some extra sweetness, a date or drizzle of honey! If you need to make more of a meal out of it (hello breakfast smoothie)….add oats/cereal too!
And that is how Nutmeg rolls when it comes to whipping up a quick smoothie. Breakfast, morning or mid-arvo snack. Enjoy!
